I just read this on Wikipedia: ", , and , were merged into a single character: ." I recently reviewed this character (弁) in my Anki kanji deck and thought it was odd that it had so many different meanings. Fascinating.

Jonathan I like your new slogan or motto!:
「I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was」

It reminds me of the American Pokemon theme song which although I think for you it would sound more like this:

"I wanna be the very best
Like no-one ever was
To catch them is my real test(漢字検定)
To study them is my cause
I will travel across the land
Searching far and wide
For each 漢字 to understand
The power that's inside

Chorus
常用漢字! (Gotta Catch 'em)
It's you and me
I know it's my destiny
常用漢字!
Ooh, you're my best friend..."

BikenglishさんとAnonymousさん、
覚えやすく説明してくれてありがとうございます。代表的な意味と例を覚えようと思います。旧字体はやはりあまり気にしないほうがよさそうですね。

snskさん、
漢字がいろいろあって面白いですが、ありすぎて全部読めないというのも事実ですね。〈汗〉特にアメリカ人の僕にとって!

BK.Mitchellさんへ
That, indeed, was exactly what I had in mind when I entered that phrase. But, I've gotta admit, I'm digging your version a lot more than I'd like to admit. :-)

oh, john, you really like kenji! i just learn them and remember how to write them without thinking of why they should be written in those forms..but for those you mentioned in this entry, i can tell the difference

「瓣」: the character [瓜] in the middle means a part of plant or seeds.
The Chinese writing of petal is 花瓣.

「辯」: the character [言] in the middle means talk. So "debate" in Chinese is 辯

「辨」: the middle character means 刀 (knife) in ancient chinese. So you have knife in the middle to seperate. 辨 means to distinguish

actually, one more similar character is 「辦」. 力means power or energy. Whatever you do, you need energy to support you. And thus 辦 means doing.

Helen, thanks so much for your comments and the great info! What you said definitely makes keeping those kanji straight in my mind a lot easier. I hadn't seen 辦 before. Thanks again.
