Yesterday, I stopped by Jack In The Box to get a couple of burgers. (For those that might not know, Jack In The Box is a common fast-food restaurant here in the States.) I entered the drive-thru and ordered a burger (an Ultimate Cheeseburger with bacon, if you must know—and for the first time) and decided to get a medium drink to accompany it. I did this because living in Japan has kind of weaned me off of gigantic drinks to some extent and I simply didn't want a huge cup of soda.

As you likely already suspect, I got the cup that you see pictured on the left. (The CD is there for scale.)

When the guy at the window gave it to me, I told him that I ordered a medium. He replied that that was a medium. I was flabbergasted. When did that become a medium? Even a large? Last I recall, that was an extra-large. It's surreal and kind of unsettling. But that's America's fast-food culture these days, I guess.

昨日、あるファーストフード屋のドライブスリーでチーズバーカーとソーダの中を注文した。数年前にきっとソーダの大を注文したはずだけど、昨日中を注文したのは、日本滞在の影響だと思う。アメリカの飲み物の量と、日本の飲み物の量との差は大きいだろ？僕が日本にいるとき、レストランの小さい飲み物にだんだん慣れて、飲み物の量がそんなに多くなくてもいい、と悟った。（そんなカルチャーで育ったもんなので、わかるのが超遅かったけどね。）そして、アメリカに帰国してても、できるだけソーダの量を控えめにしようとしている。なので、中を注文したんだ。

でも、ドライブスリーのウィンドーでをもらったのは、左上の写真に写っているソーダのコップだった。

「はっ？！何これ？注文を間違ってるみたいだ」と思いながら「あのー、中を注文したんだけど」と店員さんに言ったけど、「それが中ですよ」と言われた。改めて、ハッ？アメリカの中はいつあんなに大きくなったんだよ！あんなでかいコップは、数年前に中でも大でもなく、特大だったのに！そのファストフード屋だけのことかもしれないけど、きっとこれが現代のファストフードカルチャーにつながっているに違いないと思う。

マジでびっくりしたよ･･･。「大」っていったい何のサイズのものか！

岡崎地方は今週の豪雨に降られているけど、ここの湾岸地方も大きなハリケーンに襲われそうだ。でも、ヒューストンじゃなくて隣のルイジアナ州のほうがあぶないようだ。（ほら、StormPulseというサイトで詳しく見られる。）でも、ヒューストンではこれから大雨が降るかもしれない。さっき一時間ぐらい降ってて、止んだら虹が空に現れた。完全なアークの形をした虹の写真を撮らずにはいられなかった。



よく見えるもんじゃないからな。

Bikenglishさんから驚かせる通知を受けたところです。（ありがとう！）

豪雨による洪水に一番被害を受けた岡崎をはじめ、関東地方と東海地方が豪雨で大変だそうです！土砂崩れで脱線した電車とか、死亡した方とか、行方不明の方とか･･･。梅雨って激しくなれるんだ。

その地方の皆さん、大丈夫ですか！連絡してくださいよ！無事だろうと思っていても、心配せずにはいられませんよ。

Okazaki's the hardest-hit city in a torrential downpour that's caused a lot of flooding, apparently. It looks pretty bad and I'm worried about a few folks down there in Okazaki and the surrounding areas. I'm sure they're all fine, but still. Deaths, missing folks, flooded areas, derailed trains. "Heavy rain since late Thursday has flooded hundreds of houses and roads, triggered landslides and destroyed bridges and river banks." Wow.

Yesterday at school, I stopped by the arcade and wandered around for a few minutes. I stumbled upon the game Tekken 5 and, though I've never had much interest in the series, I stopped to look at a video that was running on the screen. I glanced up at the title of the game and saw something interesting: that there was kanji behind the "Tekken 5" text. It was 鉄拳, the kanji for "iron" and "fist." Huh. It had never actually occurred to me to think about the name "Tekken" as Japanese.

本日より大学の勉強が再び始まります。今学期は、米国歴史は2コマ、数学は2コマの授業を受ける予定だ。昔に歴史の授業が耐えられないほどつまらなかったけど、少し年をとり、歴史の面白さと価値がよりわかるようになった。しかし、歴史も数学も得意な科目でないので、ややナーバスだ。とりあえず、頑張るから心配はしない。これからは本番だ！これから輝く将来を手に入れるためにファイトしますよ！

ところで、明日の朝に、やっと届いた新しい電子辞書を手に入れる。楽しみだ！

今週末中、家族会が行われる。全然行きたくないけど、父の家族の第一家族会なので、父のために行くことにした。でも、僕は一日でいい。（日曜日ってことになっている。）

修正：「家族会」って日本語がよく通じないんだって。僕としたことが！

Tae Kimさんのブログで、常用漢字表が修正されるという話が流れている。「俺」や「匂」や「誰」など、今までいったいなぜこの字が省かれていただろうかな、と思わずにはいられない。Kimさんが言うとおり、常用漢字表だけを使って漢字の勉強をするのがよくないということだ。

愛するSharp PW-7000の電子辞書が故障して使えなくなった。日本人の知り合いからいただいた辞書で、日本滞在のお土産としても持っている。まあ十年前のモデルだから、しょうがないじゃん。どう見てもとても役立つ辞書だったので、同じような形をしたPW-M800をeBayで買うことにした。含まれる辞書は、基本的なのが同じで、それもカタカナ辞書・四字熟語辞典・日経パソコン用語事典なども入ってて、画面も大きくて、届く日が楽しみだ！

My precious Sharp PW-7000 electronic dictionary—a gift from a Japanese acquaintance and also a pretty big souvenir of my time in Japan—is no longer working. Well, it is a ten-year-old model, after all. So I purchased for myself a Sharp PW-M800, that model's descendant, it seems. Along with all of the dictionaries my old one included, I get a katakana dictionary, a four-character expression dictionary, a business dictionary and more, including a nice big, fat screen. Looking forward to it.

今月の記事の数は（このポストも含めれば）わずかな三つしかない？！あかん！短くてももっと書くべきだね。記事の数が減ってしまった理由として、最近手帳にプライベートな日記をも書いているのを挙げられると思う。少なくとも漢字を書くために、毎日短い記事を書こうとしている。でも、その日記に書くことと、このブログに載せることとが全然違うから、影響がそんなに強くないだろうね。まあ、言い訳はもういい、ってことで。

僕はこの間『鬼嫁日記』というテレビドラマを見終わった。見た目がとてもバカバカしいけど、まあバカバカしくないとも言えないけど･･･僕が見たら意外と面白かった！きっと見なくていいもんだろうと最初に決め付けたのに、すっかり好きになっちゃったね。なぜかというと、・・・まあ、優れた作品とは全然言い切れないけど、なんか･･･とても笑えた。（第2シーズンは面白くないというのを耳にしたけど。）

So recently I finished watching a Japanese drama called "Oniyome Nikki," which is apparently called "Diary of Life with a Devil of a Wife" in English. It's a really silly comedy that, by all rights, should be unwatchably stupid, but ... it's not. It's surprisingly entertaining. In fact, it's become one of my favorite comedy dramas. There's just something about the writing, like they took the silly setting—a man and his trials with his "evil" wife—and got pretty good writers for it. Or something like that. Whatever the case, it was pretty funny. (I hear the second season is weaker, though.)

I was thinking about taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test here in America this year. However, in doing a bit of searching at the Japan Foundation's website—they administer the test—it turns out that the test is not even being held anywhere around here. The closest testing site is in Arkansas, which is a nine-hour drive from here. Arkansas, people. Which puts this test pretty solidly in "maybe next year" territory.

年末に能力試験一級に挑戦して受けようと思ってたんだけど、アメリカの試験場に関する情報を、試験を行うジャパンファウンデーションという施設のウェブサイトで見つけ出そうとしたら、ヒューストンどころか、アメリカのこの地方にさえも試験場がないらしい。一番近いのは944キロを離れているアーカンソー州にあるらしくて、車で9時間もかかるんだ！試験を受けるにはどうしてそのチンケな州まで行かなければならないんだ！っていうわけで、来年にしようかと思っている。今、特にあの資格をとる必要もないし。受けなくて、日本語習得を続けるつもりだ。
