"One, two, THREE, four, five, SIX!!!"? Really?

For the last few months comedian Atsumu Watanabe, who is known by the stage name Sekai No Nabeatsu, has been getting a lot of air time on Japanese TV. Almost all of his performances have relied on his ability to act wacky while counting.—via Japan Probe

Out of masochistic curiosity, I watched parts of a couple of the videos posted at Japan Probe and was pretty disgusted with the sheer stupidity of his act and the popularity of it. Seriously, as much of a one-trick pony as he is (or, apparently, was, from what I've heard), Yoshio Kojima is five times better than this guy. Kojima's act was stupid, yeah, but in a much more entertaining and generally less insulting way. This is just way too ludicrous.

I like neither this guy nor Kojima.
I don't get what's so funny with them.
I have an impression that it is not that these guys are really funny, but it is that TV producers want to have people believe that they are funny.
I rarely watch TV lately anyway.

By the way, Kansai style of comedy is a bit different from Kanto style of comedy. I like SAMMA and a few other Kansai entertainers, but generally I prefer Kanto style.

I agree that TV producers put those sorts of people out there and try to influence folks to think that they are funny. It seems they are largely successful, too.

Hm. I'm not too familiar with the differences between Kanto and Kansai style, though I'm passingly familiar with Kansai style. Is this the SAMMA that you like?

Yeah!That's Samma

Might not be amazing.
I often find English speaking comedians not funny because 1)I don't understand the language, 2)I don't share background knowledge/practice.
etc.

Yeah. I often wonder why people find these acts humorous. It just seems dumb.

I agree with you. The action of "Nabe-atsu" is only stupid, and it has no humor, I think. He is an entertainer who I don't to want to see again.

Yeah, I see guys like this and wonder, if it's that easy to make it big, why I'm not famous too.

そういうクレームが出る恐れがあるかもしれませんね。なんてバカなネタです。

Like wise, I think it's not funny.
今も昔もこの手の芸人は、注目されてはすぐに消えてしまうものです。やはり喋りができないといけません。

This bilingual weblog is a personal journal of thoughts and experiences related, sometimes in tenuous ways, to Japan, its language, and to my journey to understand them both better. I'm utterly infatuated with typos and strive to incorporate them in all of my work. (E-mail me at jontarou at the domain of gmail.com.)
