JapanSugoiっていうサイトで、よくテレビに出ているマリエってモデルの情報を偶然に見つけたところ。僕、あまりワイドショーを見ないんだけど、マリエを何回も見たことがある。で、見るたびに「どうやってこの外国人の日本語はこんなに上手になってるんだろう」と思っちゃうもんだ。でもさ、日本で育てられたみたいで、それが日本語がそれほどできるわけ。つまり、外国人って言うわけがないだろう。

So there's this 20-year-old foreign-looking girl named Marie that appears often on variety shows here. Her Japanese is bloody perfect and, because of that, I've been wondering about her backstory every time I see her. Well, I just discovered that she was raised here. Yup, that'll do it, all right.

さっき、「演歌の女王」の結末を見たところなんだけど、僕ってさ、ものすごくがっかりしたよ！

第８話までは大丈夫だったけど、第９と１０話はダメだった。第８話で急に物語のトーンやフォーカスがかわってきて、面白くなくなっちゃった。というか、物語の質が悪くなったって言ったほうがいいかも。何でこの面白いドラマがこんなにかわったのか？！むかつくっ！

Okay, so I just finished watching the end of the drama Enka no Joou (meaning Queen of Enka) and I am so freaking disappointed. I couldn't suitably express my disappointment in Japanese, so here's a bit of English.

The series consists of ten episodes. One through eight were fine—a quirky and pretty likable comedic drama. But with nine—or more precisely, the end of eight—the tone and focus of the show totally, totally changed and it got really stupid. I only watched until the end for closure, basically. The end of episode eight turns the show into a serious tragedy/crime drama (which, had they followed up on, could have been pretty successful, perhaps); but with the start of episode nine, it immediately loses stream becomes really sappy in trying to tie things up too nicely at the end with nice, happy endings for everyone.

Anyway, for those considering the series, you can watch until the end of episode eight if you don't mind the lack of solid resolution (though you do receive an open-ended one, you might say). It's pretty amusing until that point. Beyond eight—well, you've been warned.

I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth. I'm going to wash it out with the second episode of Seirei no Moribito now, an excellent anime that I'm quite sure will not do the same thing to me.

これから「精霊の守人」っていうドラマの第２話を見るところだ。「演歌の女王」みたいにがっかりさせないシリーズに違いないと期待している。

僕は最近、「演歌の女王」ってドラマにはまってる。知っているかい？コンピューターで見てるよ。天海祐希を主演するシリーズで、とっても面白いって思うよ！天海祐希ってさ、有名な演歌歌手になりたがってる、あんまりついてない人の役で出る。で、僕が天海祐希を知ってるのは、あの人が主演者として出た２００５年の「女王の教室」ってドラマを見たことあるってわけ。それもよかったから、天海祐希は気に入った女優と言えるようになったんじゃないかなと思う。最初の話はもっとコメディ的だったけど、現在のはシリアスになってる。（大阪弁も使われるし、ええ勉強やないのか！）

日本語の聞き取り力が強まるように、僕はもっとドラマとかアニメとか見るべきだと思うようになった。

次のシリーズは「精霊の守人」っていうアニメ。すごく面白いらしいから、そりゃ！

When I watched Hikaru no Go all those months ago, I, of course, watched a subtitled version. And it was good.

But just now I saw a dubbed clip and my ears just won't stop bleeding. Man, I forgot how much I hate dubbed anime. (Seriously, something's wrong when you want to punch Sai in the mouth every time he speaks. Something is seriously wrong with that.)

Yet, I am masochistic and couldn't help but watch a few clips.

Shoot—I'm supposed to be relaxing, but what am I doing? I'm studying kanji for the first time in I don't know how long.

勉強しないと決めたのに、久しぶりに漢字を勉強しているところ。またしまった！

今日、ビデオの字幕で「離せや言うとんじゃ！」という表現をみた。こんな日本語がわかるようになるのには時間がたくさんかかるに違いないなぁ。

So thus does my fifth term here at Yamasa come to an end.

And, man, I've never felt so mentally wiped. I need to get out and try hard to relax as much as possible over this break. I'm also faced with the conflicting goals of increasing my communication with my friends back home and wanting to avoid my laptop as much possible. Just beautiful.

However, this was a pretty good term.

明日は今学期の最終日。疲れ抜いていてよく休みたいと思う一方、この２ヵ月半の良い授業の完了に残念でならないように感じている。

ヤマサでの勉強の進行に伴って時間が経つのはどんどん早く感じてきている。しかし、時間というものは、人間の希望や心配などを問わずに進行するというものでない、すなわち時間は人間のはかない存在を考えずに続きつつあると言えるだろう。

私はいつ帰国するか、何か予定が決まっていないが、後半年余日、あるいは九ヶ月余日だと思う。帰国する時を想像してみるにつけ、やや落ち込んでしまう。日本の生活に慣れており、国に帰りたくはあまりないのだ。しかし、時間がとまらない。

私と同じ時にヤマサに着いたスクールメートが今週末帰国することになっているのを私は今日知った。ショックでしょうがないものなのだ。最初の三ヶ月は一緒に勉強することができたが、あいにく、それ以来は一回も同じ教室で勉強したことがないということになってしまった。彼女は勉強にどれくらい頑張ったことか。ホンコンでも頑張って、チュウさん！応援しているから！チュウさんばかりか、ヨウさんもローダさんもシンシアさんもジェームズさんも今学期が最後で、もうすぐヤマサから消えてしまう予定。苦しいなぁ。

考えてみれば、人生は死なずには誰も済めないものなので、なるべく人生の経験を大切に思うべきだと思っている。

Well, my final big test of the term proceeded without major incident. Now to coast through the rest of the week. I'm feel like I might be coming down with something, though.

今学期の最後の大試験は無事終わった。金曜日まで頑張れればいいと思っているが、やや病気気味で心配している。

So yesterday evening, I played some 9x9 go at KGS. (I'm into 9x9 games recently for two reasons: they're short, and they're great for practicing tactics.) It seems that—for the first time, I'm pretty sure—I actually played a move powerful enough to end the game immediately. I'm pleased with myself, though even I didn't understand the power of the move when I played it (which means that I've gotta get my board-reading abilities up.)

夕べ、ＫＧＳというサイトで囲碁の勝負を一局した。（私は最近、九路盤の勝負にはまっている。それは、九路盤の勝負も短く、タクティックスの良い勉強というわけ。）昨日の勝負で、すぐに勝負を終わらせる一手を私は初めて打ったようだ。まさか、その一手はそれほど強いとは私にも打つ時にわからなかった。（要するに、盤上を読む力をアップするべきのように思っている。

Now, there's a friend of mine that griped at me to make go-related posts "interesting." In an attempt to do this a bit, I include an explanation of just why that single black stone basically exterminated all of the life around it. I tried to get an interactive go board on here (which would make things easier to understand, I think), but I couldn't get it working, unfortunately, so the graphic will have to do. Last night I went to a dinner party at Yamamoto House, one of the apartment complexes Yamasa owns. On the way, I ran into two friends in front of Kuishinbo Taro and was invited to join their get-together for the evening. I was so tempted to, but, of course, I couldn't. (Thanks for the invitation, though, guys. Sounds like it was fun! And as cute as expected.)

But I had a lot of fun over at Yamamoto House eating hotpot with everyone. Truly an evening of laughter, drama, and great summer-themed beauty (as you can see). Toward the end, we all went to the roof and shot off some fireworks too. (Man, what a view from up there, too.)

ちょっと久しぶりだね。学校の学期末に入ったので、色々で忙しいし、あまりにも疲れている。やっていなかった教科書の宿題を完成させたが、作文は締め切りまでにできなかった。それに、この間、学生のみんなは実力試験を受けさせられた。私は元気ではなくて集中が全くできなかったわけで、試験をいい加減にやり切れなかった。（読解の問題は４つしか答えなかった。）

要するに、再来週からの２週間の休みに楽しみにしている。

しかし、Ｃクラスは私の予想以上気に入ったクラスなので、今学期が終わるのに楽しみにしていないのだ。前の学期の廣江先生と同じように、今学期の担任の有滝先生と六ヶ月間一緒に勉強できないかもしれないと悩んでいる。有滝先生の性格や教え方は私のスタイルにぴったり合うので、もう一学期、有滝先生と勉強させていただくように祈っておいている。先生のボスのヨコザワ先生に。（笑）

でも、非常に疲れている。脳みそも、体も。
だが、心がまだ日本語の興味に満ちている！！

まだ書いていない作文のうちの一つを完成させてみているところ。私は作文を書くのがあまりに嫌いで、ずっと引き伸ばしてきたが、一つさえを完成させることができたら…と思っているが。自分の意見を説明するくらいでも、なかなかできないものなのだ。

I'm in the midst of working on one of the compositions that I've yet to complete this term. I hate doing these things with a passion, but it'd be nice to do at least one of them. But these opinion papers—I just can't do 'em.

Just a bit about go.

I lost my go game with Lee today because I failed to kill three stones that I trapped in a ladder (my first one at that!) as quickly as I should have and he managed to trap me instead and capture a huge swath of the board as well. And then I almost managed to capture the other half of the board until he connected his stones at a vital spot, the location of a ko battle. Lesson learned! It was an awesome match.

今日、またライバルの李さんと囲碁の勝負をした。私は、彼のある３個のシチョウというトラップで生きつづけようのなさそうな石を早く殺さなかったので、逆に僕の石を７個もとられ、李さんは広い陣地が作れた。あまりにもくやしい！！後は、盤上の左手がとれそうになったが、李さんに強いツナギがされ、勝負をあきらめさせられた。私は負けたが、「すごい勝負で、いい勉強になったなぁ」と満足した。

So, apparently, there is a new fashion trend here in Japan of decorative eyelashes. It'll be something if I actually see someone like that.

日本に新しいファッションが発明されたらしい。私はこのファッションの名前が知らないが、本質的に飾りまつ毛である。誰かそうしている人を見れば面白いに相違ないだろう。

今日、会話テストをした。テストのタスクは二つあった。一つ目は無理なお願いするタスクであり、二つ目はクラスで勉強した物語の部分を発音やアクセントを意識して上手に読むタスクであった。無事に終わったとは言えるかもしれないが、あまりうまくいかなったように感じている。特に物語の文字はあまり読まない縦書きだったし、字のフォントも僕にとってやや読みにくかったので、点数が多少低いような気がする。しかし、まるで大きな問題はないようだと思う。

So today I had a speaking test. It was divided into two parts: asking for something inconvenient, and reading part of a story while keeping pronunciation and accent in mind. I suppose one can say that it went reasonably well; however, it didn't go all that well. The text of the story was arranged vertically and was written in a slightly unusual font that I'm not used to seeing. This slowed down my reading speed and led me to make some errors. But overall, it wasn't too bad, I suppose.

I've been there, like, three times, but I never knew that this place was the Kuishinbo Taro that everyone's always talking about. Mildly embarrassing, that. I've always gone in groups and never bothered to find out (or at least, remember) the name. Heh.

This evening, I went to karaoke with some older Japanese acquaintances of mine and had a fairly entertaining evening. I sang some songs that I'd never tried before. Some worked, others totally didn't (made worse by the fact that my reading speed is kind of slow sometimes).

We ended up using a different style of karaoke machine than the one I'm used to. I've used it once before but I sound even worse on this machine as compared to how I sound on the normal one. I did manage to score a 93 out of a 100 on Kohmi Hirose's "Gift," though, even though it was the first time I'd even sung it, so I guess it's not all bad.

Today's concert was considerably cooler than expected. It was divided into two parts: first, a piano with two (possibly electric) violas; and then a clarinet supported by cello, viola, and two violins. Particularly, the first part was interesting since they played their music over this sort of music that I don't know how to describe except to say that it seems like the sort of music that a cheesy magician in America might perform to Las Vegas. It was awesome. (You'll have to take my word for it, I guess.) The second part was pretty standard classical music.

After that, I went to lunch with a group of kind middle-aged ladies. We talked some about how the standard of beauty in Japan has changed because of international influence. The given example was how they think that the new Miss Universe, Riyo Mori of Japan, is not pretty, whereas, though I've barely seen her and don't care about her existence, I—and apparently many others of my generation—think she is indeed pretty attractive, if not "Miss Universe level." (But interestingly, she doesn't look very Japanese to me.) I was also asked if I have a girlfriend and, when I said no, one of these ladies said, "Oh, if only I were younger." [sweatdrop] They said that Japanese girls tend to flock too much to foreign guys, but I told them that I wasn't getting any of that (which is good, clearly, since I don't care to hang around that sort of person anyway).

Let me add that I didn't bring up these topics of conversation.

One of the ladies that I met (the one that wishes she was younger, at that) is interested in further contact, but I'm feeling kind of wary about it because I feel that she's only interested in me for practicing English, and I am recently very much weary of constantly being used like that. Another foreigner, a battled veteran of the the real old school of learning Japanese (if I can describe him like that) that I met a few weeks ago, strongly recommended that I find people that will, essentially, hang out with me even though I'm a foreigner and not just because I'm a foreigner. I like that attitude. I do intend to contact the lady, though, as there's no need to jump to conclusions.

So today was a pretty nice day for me. Nothing to special happened, I suppose. Brian Yamamoto showed up at school during lunch briefly while Lee and I played the first part of a two-part game of go on the paper board that I created and printed. (The board is pictured in a recent Japanese post. The text basically reads "mobile 9x9 go board: big papa style" (best translation of "otou-sama" ever!).) That match continued after class, when Lee's white managed to break my winning streak by crushing my black by creating two living groups (which is the recommended—or rather, perhaps necessary—method for white to win 9x9 games since black plays first and can generally pretty easily split the board.)

We're going over some very fundamental grammar with Yamaguchi-sensei in a series of classes. This series, roughly entitled "Do? Did?", kind of got on my nerves at first because it was covering some seriously basic stuff, but as it's progressed, we've begun discussing some pretty fine details that I've always been vague on and it's become pretty useful. The classes are quite easily the most technical that I've had since coming to Yamasa, which I simultaneously enjoy (the old English enthusiast in me, there) and don't care for (since I generally intuitively understand the majority of what's being presented, the technical details, while interesting, seem only to serve to needlessly complicate things for me and possibly undermine my previously existing understanding, so I try not to pay too much attention to them). All in all, I'm enjoying these classes. I like Yamaguchi-sensei. She's a newcomer to the school this term and I kind of see her as a powerhouse.

Tomorrow is Lee and Ling's final radio show and, after that, there's a goodbye party at the station for Ling and Yo, who are soon returning to Taiwan. And Saturday, it looks like I've been invited to a concert and to karaoke as well. Should be fun.

最近、山口先生と「する？した？」という日本語の基本的な動詞テンスを解説していただく授業が行われる。正直に言えば、先々週の一回目の授業で「なぜこんな初級レベルのような復習をさせられているのか」と私は思った。しかし、その授業が進むにつれて、どんどん面白くなってきた。私は、ほとんどの内容はもうわかっているのだが、ある大切で曖昧なことはあまりわかっていないので、いい勉強になっている。

例えば、僕にとって「のだ」という日本語文型は特に不思議だと思う。あいむじゅんする説明を聞いたこともあり、「のだ」はどういうニュアンスを表すか、日本語をし始めて以来さっぱりわかっていない。だが、日本語の文型を詳しくご存知の山口先生の授業で復習をすることができ、もう少しわかるようになったような自信があるのだ。

しかし、自信があるといっても、上手に使えるようになったというわけではない。それはまだまだである。

So I'm feeling pretty good this morning. I got to talk with my father on the phone (he called unexpectedly), I got to chat with one (and a half?) of my best friends back in America, I'm back in contact with one of my best friends here in Okazaki, and the weather's great. Today's gonna be good, I think.

なぜか今週あまりに眠くてしかたがない。ある授業でうとうとしそうになるほどなので、気になる。そういうわけで、今日早く寝ようと決めた。

この間もらった碁石を持っているので、学校で九路盤で囲碁が打てるようにしたいなと思って、マイクロソフトワードでこのポストの右上の写真に写っている、いわゆる「携帯九路盤　御父様風」という紙の碁盤を作って印刷した。今まで、その盤上にもう４局をやった。今日、僕は英語の生徒と勝負を初めてやったのだ。彼は将棋の３段なので、囲碁の初心者のわりによくできたと思う。どこでも囲碁が打てて気持ちいいことだ。しかし、学校では李さん以外相手がいなくて、やや寂しいものがある。

I've made it no secret that I'm a fan of the classic animated weekly series Sazae-san, but recently I've started watching Chibi Maruko-chan as well—I'm not sure why I haven't been, really, since it airs immediately before Sazae-san and all—and it's managed to impress me. When I first watched it, it didn't appeal to me too much, but since then, it's really started to become a favorite. It's a bit less sterilized than some might argue that Sazae-san is—the father gets drunk and the language is a bit more casual and such.

But I'm not selling out on Sazae-san or anything, now.

So Brian Yamamoto is back in town again after a two-month absence and he returned with a little something for me: his old portable full-sized 19-by-19 go board with stones! (Great day in the morning!) So now I have my own vinyl go board to play on! Needless to say, I have expressed much appreciation for the gift. He used to play back in the day, you know. I shall have to convince him to play a little with me.

This evening, Brian, Yo, and Lee all came by for a little while and Lee (whom you might remember is my go rival) sat transfixed, watching the game that started playing, on a whim, by myself this morning. We ended up playing a couple of dozen moves before they left. (Interestingly, this marks the first time that four people have been in my room at the same time. If only I could get my friends Sharkbait, Elddonnemar, and Eien Kunan in here at the same time. Shoot, or even one at a time—I ain't picky!)

この間、岡崎に戻ってきた山本ブライアンさんはプレゼントを持ってきたよ。それは、彼の最近使われていなかったビニール碁盤と碁石のセット！山本さんは昔、囲碁を打ったそうだが、現在全然打っていないので、私にプレゼントとしてあげることに決めた。ラッキー！明らかに感謝をしている。今日、碁ライバルの李さんとちょっと打ってみることができた。

山本ブライアンさんが岡崎に戻ってきてくれている！二ヶ月前にＹＡＭＡＳＡを出てから、アジア巡りをしてアメリカに帰ったが、これから日本の生活を続けられることになった。すごいのではないかと思う。私も日本企業などに就職できるほど日本語が話せるようになったら、この留学は割に合ったように思う。

しかし、他の国と比べると、日本の会社で働くのは非常に大変だとよく言われているのを認める必要がある。プレッシャーに弱い私にとっては、日本の会社に働けばうまくいけない可能性がやや高いかもしれないと思うが、そうなら日本で働かないほうが良いだろう。しかしながら、そういった気がする一方、日本の会社が現在変わってきていると主張する人もいる。サービス残業をはじめ、色々な会社にかかわる問題が直されており、将来展望は良さそうだと僕は偶に聞く。

どうなるか誰も言えないが、僕は興味を持って見ている。

とにかく、山本さん、頑張って！応援している！

まあ、久しぶりの日記ポストだね。

クラスメートのヨウさんが今月末に帰国する予定になっているので、先週の金曜日のラジオ放送は最後の私たちが出る放送になってしまった。そういうわけで、先週中あまり勉強せずに準備を完成させていた。いいことに、金曜日の生放送は無事にできた。

ラジオ放送をするのは好きなのだが、準備をするのには多くの時間をかけなければならなくて大変なことだ。したがって、休もうと私は決めた。また出るかもしれないと思う一方、放送の準備は考えるとやる気が消えてしまうほどつらいものだ。

しかし、準備の文句を言ってばかりいても、楽しくはなかったというわけではない。『しゃべり場わいわい』に出させていただいて私は嬉しくて感謝をしている。しかし、最近疲れがちの私にとって、休憩する必要は無視できない。

ヨウさん、ありがとうございました。一緒に頑張って放送をするのは非常に楽しかった。またチームとして働けばいいなぁと思っている。

Okay, I'm aware that the English side of this blog has been suffering of late, as a lot of my meager energy has been put into the other side. But have no fears, for our future together is still bright. Bright like the Morning Peacock.

So just now, I was surprised to hear some child (I think it's safe to assume) in the house right across the street (I believe) practicing the Super Mario Bros. theme on the piano. Made my morning, I'll tell you what. It's been about twenty minutes now and, you know, with this song flowing across the area, it's almost like the neighborhood anthem, I tell you.
