Today was awesome. Go-wise, at least.
I arrived at Kurashi no Gakkou at about 2:05 and sat listening to the presentation about different methods of capture (
shichou,
utte-gaeshi, and
geta). It was pretty interesting but there were a number of points that I already knew and I sat, fidgeting, thinking, "I wanna plaaaay." Eventually, I got to play the older gentleman that I played before and, alas, won the game. But I had a four-stone handicap and he guided me a bit during the game, so it wasn't a pure win, but still, I did well enough on my own that I feel that I can accept a certain amount of credit for the win. (No camera so no picture, though. Shoot.)
After the game, I discovered that that gentleman is a 3 dan-level player. Awesome. Another gentleman from the Go volunteer group came and explained a few things about the flow of our game (thus making me late for Lee and Ling's "Shaberiba Waiwai" radio broadcast, but it was hard to care after this opportunity arose). He suggested that I was about 30 kyu but my opponent disagreed and said that I was at least 20 kyu. All right! Progress! (For the record, 40 kyu is the lowest. Interestingly, I'm rated at 19 kyu at the KGS Go Server.) I
feel that I'm improving. I'm making progressively fewer really stupid mistakes. I'm making
better stupid mistakes.
When the explanation ended, I went over to the radio station to listen to the rest of the show, then returned to Kurashi no Gakkou with Lee, Attila, Yo, and Kaku. I played a 13x13 training game with Attila, as it was about his third or fourth game ever. Then we played his first game on a 19x19 board.

It was a fantastic match. After seeing that he understood the principles of the game pretty well (and losing the previous game a bit more than I wanted to), I decided to play pretty hard. Things were going decently well when suddenly Kanda-sensei came in and gave an explanation of one huge glob of Attila's stones that I was trying to capture right in the middle of the board. It was informative, but Attila ended up surviving my deadly attack and things got a bit tougher for me, and it ruined my concentration too. But I managed to get a doomed-looking set of stones on the left living and things looked up for me.
The most interesting part of the game, though, was the lower-left area. Toward the beginning and most of the middle of the game, this was solidly Attila's (black) territory but I tried a desperate attempt at an invasion and actually succeeded in reducing his territory and brought things to a standstill by inadvertently invoking the power of a
seki. I'm quite pleased that I was able to pull this off and decrease his territory. It's a fairly complicated situation and we showed it to Kanda-sensei, who explained it all to us.
In the end, the final score (komi included) was 48.5 moku for my white and 46 for his black. I was pretty surprised about that. Even though I allowed a few move undos for the sake of practice and the loss of the capture of the black in the middle, my strategy was sound enough for me to win. I was playing as fiercely as I could, but given all of that, I expected to lose. Well, w00t. Attila played very well, I think. He's a shougi 7 kyu and plays a lot of chess, so I figured he might be pretty good.
Next week should be interesting, at yet
another student, my buddy Chin-san, known as Ruru, told me tonight that she's 18 kyu.
Choudo ii. (Just right.) We were talking trash to each other over a group dinner at Seiyu tonight. She wants to make me cry a river, people. That's right, a 川. She said that. Oh, it is
so on. Man, I'm looking forward to that.
Here comes a new challenger! (Oh, this looks useful.)
