"... there are apparently only two races of folks at this school."

Er? From the CNN article:

"... 55 percent black, 43 percent white."

so doesn't that mean that 2% of the school population is another race? [Thus indicating that there are more than two races at the school]

Okay, got me there. I will restate that and say that I think it's amusing that the other two percent aren't worth mentioning in the article. Actually, I'd be curious to know what the dynamic is like for these "others." Just what are they, and did they generally choose one side or the other--things like that.

They're in freakin' Georgia. Note that this is actually the first prom the school's had - previously, senior dance events were privatized, and you know Georgia isn't exactly known as a progressive place. (Note that a number of the white students were not permitted by their parents to go to the official prom, and had a private white prom for themselves.)

promについては、VOAで取り上げられていたことがあり、キャメロンディアスの「メリーに首っ丈」の最初のシーンにあったので、少しわかっているつもりです。ジョナサンさんが伝えたいこととは外れますが、私の疑問としては、「みんなカップルで出席するのかな」「もしそうだったら、相手が見つからない男（女）にとっては、つらいイベントだな」「別に相手なしでも、正装で参加するだけでOK」があります。

人種の問題というのはどこでも微妙ですね。
実は私は、米国におけるアフリカ系の人々に対する偏見というのがいまいちつかめないでいる。日本人のなかでもいろんな人種に偏見を持っている人はいるのですが、これとはまた違った偏見なのではないか、と思っています。
まあ、みんなで仲良くしようって意思があるひとはどこにでもいますから、その輪を拡げていくことが大事ですね。
